MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT - HOUSTON

Humans out there, I have a question for you. What would you try to find love? Wouldn't you love to take the guess work out of your hands and just have someone else pick your partner? I am a hopeful romantic who loves reality television but only the shows that help you find love, true love. So, I keep my screen tuned to the Bachelor, 90 Day Fiancée, and the ultimate challenge, Married at First Sight. I have followed this series faithfully since season one. I am sure most of you can figure out the plot by the title. It is a show where five strangers walk up to the altar, in front of their friends and family, and promise to love five other strangers the first time they lay eyes on them. A blind date that never ends. Now before you dismiss it as some creepy reality show meant to shock you, this show is really serious.

There are many things I love about this show. The thousands of singles who apply for the show are whittled down into a manageable list by the experts on the show, Dr. Pepper, Pastor Cal and Dr. Viviana. I don't know about you, but before I got married, dating was hard. If I were single, I would definitely try out for the show. I believe the experts couldn't do a worse job than I did choosing people to date. They cast people that seem relatable, not overly glamorous, and they have a good track record with diversity. At least they aren't going to set you up with a serial killer. They want the couples to succeed because that lends credibility to the show.

To keep the show from getting stale, every season they move to a new town. This season it was filmed in Houston, last season in Atlanta. It moves around the country although they haven't gone out West yet.  It has a pretty good success rate, twelve marriages and many children are products of this show. You can't fake babies for the camera. In contrast, only one Bachelor has married his Bachelorette, although sometimes they change their mind and go for the runner-up.

After the honeymoon, while the couples get adjusted to their new partners, they aren't sequestered, they keep up with their normal lives all while filming the show. They go to work every day, interact with their friends, and visit the family. To all you singles out there, this show is like a crash course in dating, you can learn about "what not to do" watching these couples navigate life with a new partner.

But a new season is upon us, and it is now the time to decide, whether they will stay married or get a divorce. I will boldly make my predictions about the Houston couples after watching the matchmaking special. Rachel and Jose will go the distance, they seem like the perfect match. Brett and Ryan might have a shot, if he is ready to settle down with a real woman and not the imaginary one in his head. I don't give Johnny and Bao much hope because they are both perfectionists, and she has already met him and passed. I think Zack and Michaela will stay together, these two over achievers can achieve a lot together. Myrla and Gil make a beautiful couple, but her high maintenance ways will turn off firefighter Gil.

I'm really excited to see if the couples turn out to be train-wrecks or heaven sent. Only time will tell. Meet you here at the end of the season!

THE TOP TEN THINGS WORKING BEHIND THE BLACKJACK TABLE HAVE TAUGHT ME ABOUT LIFE & LOVE -- BECAUSE LOVE IS THE BIGGEST GAMBLE OF ALL.

                               TALES FROM BEHIND THE FELT

For most of my career I have worked at casinos, on land in California and Nevada, and at sea all over the world. Let me just say that you learn a lot about the human personality when you watch thousands of people from behind the felt of a blackjack table.

I wrote a novel, Cruise Quarters, about my experiences living and working on a cruise ship. While I was promoting my book, I received a request from a website asking me to provide a quote from my novel. Imagine my surprise a few months later when I Googled my name and I found a list of websites where my quote had been used. The first and most exciting was Goodreads, where it was listed as a top gambling quote. Being a writer, I was thrilled because Goodreads is the world’s largest site for readers. Online casinos picked up my quote, people on social media sites, and even Seeking Alpha, a financial website. My words have even been used as part of a legal argument in an Indian lawsuit.

Working at a casino is hard. You are on your feet for eight hours, with seven demanding faces in front of you. Even though it is a challenging job I like it because I know all the rules and procedures I have to follow. The rules are all written down in a very big manual.

The truth behind that one quote was not all that I learned by working at a casino. So I have decided to share some more of my wisdom with you. Even though you might not ever visit a casino, hopefully you enjoy them.

1. It is hard to walk away from a winning streak, even harder to leave the table when you are on a losing one.

This is the quote that started it all. As a dealer, I have watched this a million times from behind the table. People who are losing will pull out more money then they budgeted, will borrow from their friends or even open up a line of credit. Because they just believe that on the next hand, the next spin, or the next throw of the dice things will turn around. It reminds me that sometimes desperation will lead you to do crazy things. How many times have we driven by an ex-boyfriends house or drunk dialed them even though we know that we are never, ever, getting back together.

2. A player in the last stage of her gambling addiction, just wants to lose all her money.

To take it one step further when someone stays at the table so long and loses so much money, they don’t walk away with that last fifty dollars. Instead they prefer to lose it all. When they leave I watch them walk away with an empty wallet and a look of relief spread across their face. Like in that bad relationship you have to do all the crazy stuff, to convince yourself that it is really over, and only then can you begin again.

3. Before you sit down at the table make sure the dealer runs an honest game.

All the casinos in America run honest games, licensed by the state and the federal government. But you need to research the rules of each casino, whether you get paid even money or time and a half on a blackjack, or if they stay or hit on soft seventeen, because those rules can really change your odds of winning. The same applies to dating, always make sure the person you are dating is sincere. If you are dating a guy with a girlfriend or even worse a wife your odds for success go down. And if you are dating a serial womanizer, just give up.

4. In life, there are gamblers and there are people who gamble. Gamblers have studied the odds.

As I have said the rules at a casino really matter. To a gambler the difference in the rules at certain casinos can mean the difference between winning and losing. So think like a gambler, research a potential date like a gambler researches the odds at a casino. Serious gamblers follow the rules of basic strategy for blackjack. These rules are designed to increase a gamblers odds of winning at the table.

Since I consider myself the Hopeful Romantic, I have developed a basic strategy of love. Bits of hard-earned wisdom designed to increase the odds that your relationship will work. Click here to read my Basic Strategy of Love

5. Juice might get you in the door, talent keeps you there.

The casino business is like any other industry the people you know, your connections might help get you the job, but you must have the talent to succeed. In love the same rule applies. You might have an initial connection but it will take work to make the relationship work.

6. A winning streak can only last for so long.

No matter how great your life is going, one day you will hit a road block. I consider myself a realistic optimist. I hope for the best but prepare for the worst. In life that means saving for an emergency fund. I think in life we also need an emergency fund for our relationships, a back up plan if things don’t work out.

7. You’ve got to gamble big to win big.

You have to gamble big, but only if you have studied the odds, considered all the obstacles along the way, and have a back up plan. I think that in affairs of the heart you have to love with all your heart. I took a huge chance when I married my Scottish husband Ray, after only knowing him for three months. On top of that we moved from a cruise ship to Palm Springs. It was a huge gamble but many years later, I am happy to report both the move and the marriage have paid off.

8. The best part of playing one-on-one with the dealer is that there are no other players to piss you off.

I guarantee that if you sit down at a blackjack table that it won't be long before one of the other players will be happy to offer you some unsolicited advice. Players just don’t sit there in silence, they are happy to let you know how you or the other players screwed up the hand. Somebody took the bust card, someone didn't hit when they should have, the list goes on and on.

That is why I love dealing with just one player at the table, especially if it is a person who knows that if they follow the rules of basic strategy they greatly increase their odds of winning. In life there is always someone giving you advice you never asked for, telling you why your relationship is doomed. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong. The best advice my father ever gave me was, you have to make your own mistakes, no one else can make them for you.

9. When people work in the money store, they begin to believe the money is theirs.

In a casino the dealers and the players are surrounded by money. The dealer stands in front of a tray filled with chips and sometimes the temptation to throw a few of those chips into their tip box is just too great. Even though they know that if they get caught it will end their career, they do it because they feel like the money will never be missed.

I have been watching a fascinating mini-series on HBO, Love Fraud. It is the story of a guy who travels around the country scamming hopeful women looking for love out of their money. So, people be careful, guard your money and your heart, because sometimes when you date people they begin to believe your money is theirs. The same goes for lending money. A wise lawyer once told me, once you lend someone money they begin to believe it is theirs.

10. You can’t replay the last hand, that is in the past. You have to play the cards in front of you.

Regret, that is what holds most people back. So many times at the blackjack table people are in their head replaying the last hand, which means that they can’t concentrate on the cards in from of them.

No matter what cards life have dealt you, good or bad, I know one thing for sure, you can't relive the past. Most of us can’t get over that last relationship, or that last job. But when you keep playing that script in your head you spend so much time regretting the past that you miss the present. If you keep pining for the guy or girl who hurt you in the past, you will never see the person standing in front of you now.

Isn't that what being in the present is all about?

BEWARE OF INTERNET SURVEYS BEARING FREE GIFTS

I consider myself a pretty smart cookie. My mortgage is fixed rate, I pay off my credit cards every month, I even employ the 24-hour rule, I was certainly not one of those people, not the kind of person who gets ripped off by a scam - especially an internet scam. But I do love a bargain and maybe a free sample or two. I am also an avid reader and one day while I after I had ordered a book from Amazon a message popped up on my screen. Take this short customer satisfaction survey and win the prize of your choice. I had my doubts, but hey this was Amazon. So I filled out the survey and at the end a list of free prizes appeared. The survey was also filled with many false reviews praising their free gifts.
I am not sure what else was on offer except there was skin serum, and I am a sucker for serums and moisturizing lotions. I won’t give you the name of the company because there are so many of them but I will give you a hint. They have no skin in the game and everything they say is false, not true. I am always looking for the magic cure the skin smoother that will restore me to my twenty year old self. It wasn’t just serum it was a full sized bottle and it was valued at $98. I was a bit leery but I get free samples all the time, Kiehls, Clinique and all the reputable companies give out samples.
“Look honey” I said to my husband. "That’s a pretty good deal, $98.”
“Don’t do it I don’t know how, but they are going to get you.”
“Nonsense this survey was on Amazon. They don’t even want shipping and handling fees, just $1.99 for expedited shipping.” And that was how they got me. Once they had that credit card number they took it and ran all the way to my bank.
I received my serum, and went on vacation traveling the North West. Well, one Sunday morning my husband is checking our credit card charges for the trip and up popped not one but two charges for $98. That is because once you are in their system they send you new bottles of serum every month and charge you; yes you guessed it $98.
“Give me the phone.” I screamed And then it began. I got on the line with an operator from the company.
“I’m sorry," he said. "But you did go to our website and sign up for a free trial offer.”
“I did not.” I replied still at an indoor voice level. “I took a survey and they promised to give me a free sample and I will not pay for a free sample.”
“But you already have the product.” He tired to entice me, “Just pay the reduced rate of $60 and we will call it a day.”
Then  my outdoor voice took over, “Maybe you didn’t hear me the first time. I will pay nothing for a free sample.”
He kept insisting that I pay a small amount and I kept insisting that I wouldn’t. Until finally I just said go ahead and charge me, and I will make it my life’s mission to spread your company name up and down the internet, as nothing but the scam that you are. Well at that point he agreed to reverse all the charges on my credit card. What they didn’t tell me was that it would take two months and five phone calls between their company and my credit card company to make that happen.
Later as I was researching their scam I came upon a site called highya.com that will evaluate products and let you know if they are a rip-off. I could have saved myself so much anger and energy. I don’t like to get angry but it seems that anger is the only thing companies respond to these days, especially a company that got your money by lying and cheating you in the first place. Life has taught me that if you want to play with the dogs you have to get down in the dirt, so I learned how to hoot and holler. So before you try out that product with the glowing probably fake reviews on the Internet give highya.com a look before you place that order and save yourself tons of aggravation.
Let me leave you with two lessons I learned. First, if there is a survey promising free gifts, a big warning light should go on in you head. But my biggest lesson is this; sometimes my husband really does know what he is talking about. Let’s just hope I don’t get fooled again.

BON APPETIST - HOW TO ENJOY EATING AND NEVER SAY DIET AGAIN

I was reading a book of essays the other day by Lynne Tillman and I came upon this definition. 'Appetist, a well-adjusted employer of food. A person with a healthy desire to eat; a person who does not worry excessively about food intake; a person who does not diet constantly; someone who enjoys food thoroughly and in moderation.' That is me I thought, that describes me. I was so happy that finally in this vegan, gluten obsessed land of the perpetual diet culture there was a description of another way to live. I felt validated.

Many years ago I worked on a cruise ship and I traveled around the world. An enormous part of the appeal of joining the ship for me was the opportunity to feast on gourmet meals all over the globe. I feel that most Americans have an ambivalent relationship to food; except for special occasions, food is just something they grab and eat on the run. To say that you love to eat, that sounds almost blasphemous. People assume that if you love food, you are somewhat wanton. Other than meeting my husband Ray (an unexpected surprise), the food had definitely been one of the best parts of ship life. I couldn’t always recall all the people I dined with or what we talked about, but I did remember all the great meals. I have a simple philosophy governing my food consumption. Eat what you want but you really have to want it - and stop when you feel full. Throw in a healthy amount of exercise and you should  never be fat.

A short while ago we rented a van and meandered around Italy stopping to sight-see and eat. Italy is the land of Slow Food an international movement founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Promoted as an alternative to fast food, it strives to preserve traditional and regional cuisine and encourages farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of the local ecosystem. The movement has since expanded globally to over 100,000 members in 150 countries. Its goals of sustainable foods and promotion of local small businesses are paralleled by a political agenda directed against globalization of agricultural products.

There is nowhere in the world that is a better example of the movement than Parma, Italy. A charming town a few hours from the French border, Parma has it all. It is big enough to have a vibrant town center, but small enough to be navigable by foot. The surrounding countryside boasts over twenty castles and spas have existed here since Roman times. But the best part in case you haven’t guessed it already is that it is the home of Prosciutto de Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. In the town center you enter shop after shop with hams hanging from the rafters and cases filled with local cheeses. A pungent odor fills the air and tempts the appetite. We enjoyed a glass of wine at one of the many cafes as we watched the stylish citizenry strut their stuff.

A rainstorm forced us into a covered alleyway as we waited for Trattoria de Tribunale to open up. The meal was everything I had traveled to Italy for, chewy homemade pasta, sauces that had been whipped up in the kitchen not poured from a jar. Meat that had been cured in the area not shipped there from thousands of miles away and Crusty fresh bread from the baker down the street. Food that was meant to be savored not rushed, washed down by a local Chianti. Now just to show you that you can enjoy all of this without being fat, click the link below to watch my video of the people of Parma. I want you to see for yourself, a people with a low diabetes rate that still have a zest for life. The biking and the walking don't hurt the cause.  The only heavy person in the video is my husband and since our trip he has become an appetist and lost the belly.
Savor every bite you eat, search out the freshest ingredients. Become an Appetist and say NO to dieting. I will leave you with this thought from Paul Prudhomme, “You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food.”

TOP TEN LOVE SONGS FROM THE HOPEFUL ROMANTIC

This is a list of my personal top love songs carefully chosen over decades. The songs that celebrate love and how good it can make you feel. No, these aren’t the songs to listen to when you just got dumped, but these are the songs to play when you’ve decided to give it another go, or when you’ve met somebody new. These are hopeful songs from the hopeful romantic.

I never tire of these songs, each time I hear them they make me smile. These songs are the soundtrack to my life. I didn’t know what was behind the writing of these songs, so I scoured the Internet to tell you a little bit about each of them. Maybe, you will agree with my list, but if not I hope it will inspire you to make up one of your own.

  1. Today by Jefferson Airplane from the first album, Surrealistic Pillow
To me this song will always represent my first love. When I was in high school, my very bad boyfriend made me sit on a couch because he wanted to play a song for me. It was the most powerful song I had ever heard and it still is. Today was featured in the movie, A Walk On The Moon. It is the background music in a love scene between Diane Lane and Vigo Mortenson, a scene is so hot it sizzled.

  1. Layla by Eric Clapton with Derek and The Dominoes,
The inspiration for the song Layla was taken from an old Persian poem called "Layla and Majnun". It is a story of a man driven mad by his love for a woman who was unattainable to him. ('Layla and Majnun' is loosely translated into 'Layla and the Madman').

Eric Clapton was hopelessly in love with Patti Harrison, wife of the Beatles' George Harrison. He had tried several times to convince her to leave her marriage to be with him, to no avail. Layla was Clapton's last ditch effort to persuade Patti and convince her of his love. Even this proved unsuccessful, however. In despair, Clapton went on a heroin binge that lasted a few years.

After Clapton went through rehab for his addiction, Patti and he began a relationship (her marriage to George Harrison had ended) which culminated in their marriage in 1979.

  1. Come On Get Higher by Matt Nathanson
This is how Matt explains his song. "Did you ever eat a bowl of ice cream that was just the best ice cream you've ever eaten? And it's so good it makes your teeth hurt and you can't stop eating it and you just want to pull that ice cream's hair and slap its ass and really bruise it up and make it hurt a little bit. That's what this song is about. I think I just wrote an R. Kelly song."

Who wouldn't want to get higher with him!
  1. Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan
Speaking of ice cream, who couldn’t love a song whose lyrics are,
Your love is better than ice cream.
Better than anything else that I've tried
.
This is a song that celebrates how great love makes you feel. This is from her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, wow what a great title, and what a great metaphor for love.

  1. Love Story by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift told The Morning Call the story of this song, "I wrote it about a guy that I was talking to. He wasn't the popular choice, but I believed in it. I thought, 'This love is different, but it's real.' And I knew I needed to put that line in somewhere. I think that this song is really more about a love that's not convenient and not as comfortable as something else, but it's something you have to fight for. I added the ending [a proposal] ‘cause I want that ending. I want someone to say, 'I love you and that's all I really know.' That's the girly girl in me." It’s hard to believe that she was only sixteen when she wrote this.
If you'll be my Romeo, I'll be your Juliet

  1. If I Ever Lose My Faith in You by Sting
Sting explains, “Well quite deliberately in that the song is, two distinct parts. The first part is about the things I've lost faith in. It's quite easy to be, um, precise about the things you've lost, at least I've lost, faith in. Politics. Media. Uh...Science. Technology. Things that, y'know, everybody feels this at the moment. Yet, I along with most other people, have a great deal of hope and y'know, a feeling of things can, things will and can get better. But so what do we place our faith in? What do we still have faith in? And I can't define that as easily as I can define what I don't believe in anymore. Uh, and yet it still exists. So, I haven't defined it. I've just said, "If I ever lose my faith in you." And you, or you (laughs), could be, uh, my producer (laughs again). It could, it could be, uh, faith in, in God. It could be a faith in myself or a faith in, um, romantic love.”

  1. True Companion by Mark Cohn
Ready for a love story that will melt your heart? When Cohn was touring in 1991, he would introduce "True Companion" with some version of this story:

"Here's a tune that I wrote in the back seat of a cab going to meet my girlfriend. I'd been living with her for about seven years and all she asked me the last three was, 'How come we're not yet?'" (female audience members murmur knowingly) "I didn't really have the answer and I wrote this before I knew that I was ready to be a married man. Songs kind of tell you where you're at sometimes. I sang this tune to her in the restaurant, and I was excited because I thought it was a great lyric, and she was excited because she thought it was a proposal." (laughter) "Men are scum!" (more laughter) "OK, I'm scum. But it worked out in the end. We did get married and we have a baby boy now, six months old." (lots of applause)

This song is very popular at weddings, in fact some friends of ours got married in our front garden, and we played this song as they walked to the preacher.

       8. Once in A Lifetime Love by Keith Urban
This is a song about a man starting a special relationship with a woman. Urban says in the lyrics that she doesn't need to be afraid to love him because she knows how much he loves her. He also says it's tough, but he'll never give up because what they share is a "once in a lifetime love." I’m pretty sure this one is dedicated to Nicole.

  1. Come to Me by The Goo Goo Dolls
To me this a realistic look at life, love and second chances.

Lead singer Johnny Rzeznik wrote Come To Me, ‘obviously it is inspired by the fact that I am getting married in July and the sentiment is very simple and something thing that everybody can relate to. I was really influenced by the people I was writing with. I decided that for my 10th album I really needed to learn more and see how much I could be challenged and grow as a writer. I wrote a lot of the record in New York. Every time you walk out the door in Manhattan the amount of stimulus coming at you is just so incredible that I find myself being so inspired. And then I go back into the studio and ideas just start to flow.

  1. All I Need is a Miracle by Mike and the Mechanics
I used to work on a cruise ship and this song was always playing on the jukebox in the crew bar. At that point in my life I had given up on love. But then a miracle did happen, in walked my future husband. Ray was a Scottish croupier from Glasgow and I was a simple Southern belle. So this song will always have a special place in my heart.

The composer Mike Rutherford explains in an interview prior to the song's release as a single, Rutherford commented, "The thing that makes 'Miracle' different, to me, is that it's a happy song - or it's primarily a happy song. It's 'up'. And I don't do that very often. ...It may not be optimistic, but it's a positive attitude to life." Of course, I disagree because I got my miracle.
